Soiling in Gulf Solar Projects

Soiling is more than a percentage in a simulation. In hot, dusty environments, the energy impact depends on the site, particle characteristics, rainfall, wind, module angle, cleaning method and cleaning frequency. A good design connects the loss assumption to an O&M strategy.

What causes the loss?

Dust and other particles reduce the irradiance reaching the active cell area. The effect can be uneven, creating mismatch between modules and strings. Soiling can also interact with cleaning practices and weather patterns.

Why a single generic loss can be misleading

A constant annual soiling loss may be acceptable for an early screening model, but a project with a known cleaning schedule may need a more explicit time-dependent assumption. The designer should document the basis rather than selecting a number because it is convenient.

Design implications

  • Consider module tilt and accumulation behavior.
  • Coordinate the loss assumption with the planned cleaning interval.
  • Consider water availability and cleaning logistics.
  • Review the energy impact against tariff and operating objectives.
  • Use site evidence when available.
