PVsyst and HelioScope can both support PV design, but they are used differently. A professional workflow does not ask which one is “better” in every situation. It asks which task each tool is best suited to perform and how the results can be cross-checked.
HelioScope workflow
HelioScope is useful for fast layout development, roof planes, module placement, stringing and production analysis using site imagery. It can help a designer iterate through layouts quickly.
PVsyst workflow
PVsyst is commonly used for detailed system definition, meteo selection, orientation, losses, shading/horizon, inverter/module configuration and simulation reporting. The designer has to understand each loss input and its effect on the result.
Do not copy assumptions blindly
If HelioScope and PVsyst produce different annual energy, investigate the reason. Compare resource data, orientation, temperature model, soiling, mismatch, availability, wiring, inverter losses, shading and system definition. The difference itself is useful information.
Recommended professional sequence
- Collect and verify site data.
- Develop a practical layout.
- Define strings and inverter allocation.
- Run a detailed simulation.
- Compare major losses and assumptions.
- Resolve discrepancies before issuing the design.
